The History and Art of Stained Glass Whether shining through simple suncatchers or magnificent stained glass windows, light can change bits and pieces of colored glass into art. Come explore its history, and the elements necessary to create stained glass art. Take a day trip to St. Augustine to tour a stained glass studio and several churches featuring examples of this art form.
MARY: In Art and In Literature Mary is the woman most frequently represented in Art and Literature in the History of the World. What do we really know about Mary? We’ll examine sources beginning with the New Testament, and the apocryphal work, The Gospel of James, as well as what is written of her in the Koran, in the writings of Martin Luther, and in Catholic devotional literature. Next, we’ll take a look at Mary as she’s been depicted in various art forms through the centuries. We’ll discuss apparitions as related to art and devotion, and conclude with contemporary writings concerning Mary.
There’s More Than Meets the Eye: Enjoying the Art of the Renaissance Study masterpieces from museums and churches throughout Europe from between 1000 A.D. and 1500 A.D. Learn the medieval and renaissance legends and theology, as well as Saint’s lives expressed by each artist in their work.

Tolkein: His World of Fantasy, His Life of Faith We’ll discuss his major fiction against a biographical background, his status as a scholar of Old English literature, and his relation to other intellectuals such as “the Inklings.” A primary focus will be on the values embedded in his fantasy and the way in which they grew out of his religious faith.
Saints in Society A look at the stories of people like Florence Nightingale, who founded the profession of nursing, Fr. Damian who lived and died for the lepers of Molokai, Ida B. Wells, an African-American journalist who exposed the practice of lynching at the risk of her own life and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s daughter, Rose, who founded an order of Dominican nuns that practiced an early form of hospice for cancer patients. The world has been forever changed for the better by these heroes and heroines who accomplished the extraordinary out of the ordinary “day-to-day” in their lives.
Waking Ezekiel’s Dry Bones: Reclaiming the Holy Spirit Of Creativity Whether it be the visual arts, cooking, gardening or nurturing others, there is an individual call within us. Based on the work of Janice Elsheimer’s, The Creative Call, explore the five steps to reawaken the “dry bones” of your buried creativity.

Stretching the Boundaries of Faith: The Challenge of Darwin Georgetown University theologian John Haught tells us, “There is nothing in Christian faith that should make one afraid of science’s widening and deepening of knowledge…The more extended and elaborate our sense of creation becomes, the more we should be able to enlarge our appreciation of the world’s Creator.” In keeping with this wisdom, we’ll explore such topics as the religion---science dialogue, evolution, scripture and church teaching on creation, and images of God in the Christian tradition. In this course we’ll go together in search of “God After Darwin.”
Care of Creation: The Franciscan Model Stewardship of the earth and its creatures has a long history in the Franciscan tradition. Explore St. Francis’ vision while enjoying nesting eagles, sandhill cranes, soaring osprey, gopher turtles, and wild orchids.

Turning to Christianity: Stories of Conversion This course will show how the stories of famous converts, such as C. S. Lewis, Thomas Merton, and Dorothy Day, have meaning for spiritually-minded people today. The focus will be on the work and life of several notable writers of the twentieth century including S. S. Singh, Evelyn Waugh, Graham Greene, and Edith Sitwell.

To Hell and Back with Dante A look at medieval Florence’s most famous son, Dante Alighieri, author of the world’s greatest Christian poem, The Divine Comedy. Rembrandt and the Bible In his 50 year career, Rembrandt portrayed hundreds of scenes from the New and Old Testaments. In this course you will see your favorite Bible stories as they were interpreted by this world-famous painter and learn something about the Dutch Reformation.

Not So “Out Of This World”: A Look At Christian Mystics The famous Christian Mystics of the past were not so much creatures of ‘otherwordly’ experiences as they were real people rooted in a real world, even as they were drawn deeply into the mystery of God. Examine the common traits and traditional roots of Christian mysticism, then explore the biographical contours of seven Christian mystics from medieval times to the 20th century, including Julian of Norwich, Catherine of Siena, Rudolph Otto and more.
